     Cheilitis management

Cheilitis is a condition in which lips become red, swelled and painful. It is a very common condition throughout the globe. Usually, it affects people of all races, colors, ages and genders. It is related with a number of deficiencies such as iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency etc. Sometimes it also gets associated with allergies.

There are various types of cheilitis such as angular cheilitis, actinic cheilitis, plasma cell cheilitis etc. Among these types, angular cheilitis is considered as the most common type. It is a condition characterized by cracks or blisters on the corners of mouth. These lesions on the corners of the mouth are also called as preleche or angular stomatitis.

As mentioned above, these are inflammatory lacerations that are found on the sides of mouth. These lesions sometimes become rusty and cause irritation. In some cases, when you open your mouth, these cracks start bleeding. At times, they become a repository of pus resulting in ulcerations.

Origins of angular cheilitis are still under darkness. Although, there is nothing exact known about the causes of cheilitis, yet some of its potential causes include nutritional deficiency, ill-fitted dentures etc. Deficiency of iron and vitamins are believed to play a key role in this disease. The thing that is known faithfully about angular cheilitis is that it is caused due to some bacterial or fungal infection.

Although, angular cheilitis occurs in individuals of all ages, yet it is very common in people of old age. Elderly people are more prone to angular cheilitis owing to some denture-related problems. These ill-adjusted dentures can really disturb the facial musculature, causing sores and crack at the corners of mouth. Angular cheilitis also affects kids and teenagers frequently. In these individuals, a mild form of angular cheilitis is reported. This is known as chapped or cracked lips. In this type, the corners of mouth are not affected. Rather, the surface of lips becomes cracked and dry.  The condition becomes more severe when the sufferer tries to lick his lips in a bid to moisten them. It is mostly treated through the use of lip balm. Vaseline is also very effective in treating this condition.

You can do cheilitis management in a number of ways. The first thing that you should do is to stop using flavored lip balms. Instead of imparting some benefit, these lip balms do more damage. These literally increase the dryness of lips, besides increasing irritation. You should try to use natural balms as they will cause no harm and will relieve give you comfort. They will give you a soothing effect and will relieve your pain.

Cocoa butter is another thing that lends a hand in eradicating cheilitis. It is a vegetable fat extracted from cocoa beans. If applied in very small amount on the affected area, it would yield desired results. It moisturizes the skin and decreases you discomfort.

In nut shell, the best way of cheilitis management is to stop licking your own lips, besides staying far away from flavored items. Cheilitis, when not managed properly can lead to cheilitis granulomatosa.

Angular Cheilitis-the Symptoms and Cures

Angular cheilitis is commonly known as mouth corner cracks and like the name implies usually occurs at the corner of the mouth. While its not life threatening it is painful and can be damaging to your self esteem as it’s visible to everyone.

The symptoms are deep cracks or splits at the corner of the mouth which bleed when the mouth is opened. In extreme cases ulcers or a crust may form and Candida fungus could cause an infection. Some of the ways you can tell if you have angular cheilitis is if you have cracks in the corners your mouth along with redness, swelling and tenderness in the area. Sores or ulcers which bleed and even release pus can develop without some preventative measures. Other symptoms include pain while eating, talking or smiling and can re-open the sore making them receptive to infections from the Candida yeast. The continuous cracking and healing of the cracks in the corner of your mouth may start to itch adding another problem to the others you are already trying to deal with.

It’s not known for sure what causes angular cheilitis although it has been suggested it may be caused by iron or vitamin deficiency although much of the time it appears to be caused by simple things like licking your lips too much, being out in the cold weather or chapped lips from the wind or sun. In children or babies bottle feeding, sucking on a pacifier or sucking their thumb could also contribute to angular cheilitis. Normally these things can be kept from turning into cracks in the mouth corners by using petroleum jelly, lipstick or lip balm. My favorite cure for chapped and cracked lips has always been Aloe Vera. We grew it in the backyard and used it for curing just about everything on the outside of our bodies.

Cheilitis may also be caused by a lack of vitamins B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), or B12 (cyanocobalamin) along with a deficiency in iron or an immune system that has been weakened by something such as HIV. Toothpastes and cosmetics have also been known to cause this lip problem. Even some foods or drink such as orange juice can make the problem worse. If there is lack of B vitamins it can be cured by either supplements or by focusing on foods rich in B vitamins such as dairy products, cereals and leafy vegetables for B2. For B3 and B6 eat foods such as beans, rice, fish, eggs, etc.

A doctor or a dentist can diagnose angular cheilitis depending on what is causing the problem. When it’s a case of no dentures or poor fitting ones then the dentist can probably take care of that. Elderly people experience angular cheilitis frequently because due to the loss of teeth they end up with over closure of their mouths causing liquid to form in the corners of their mouth which could develop into angular cheilitis. Many times symptoms for a toothless person can be halted with dentures. In the case of a vitamin deficiency or some other medical condition then a doctor can test and treat you for these things in order to cure the angular cheilitis.

Simple Tips To Heal Angular Cheilitis

In order to heal Angular Cheilitis, otherwise known as Perleche, there are some definite things you can do to quickly relieve the discomfort, pain, and embarrassment that the condition engenders. These are simple, yet very effective steps you can do to rapidly heal the painful sores and cracks that affect the corners of your mouth and lips.

Angular Cheilitis causes pain that makes it difficult and painful to open your mouth to talk, eat, or laugh. But the good news is that you do not have to deal with uncomfortable looks and stares at the redness and swelling of your lips and mouth that the condition gives rise to. What follows are just a few easy tips you can start following today for some fast and effective relief.

4 Simple Tips To Heal Angular Cheilitis

1. Diet

What you eat should be one part of your life that you key a sharp eye on. Eating an imbalanced diet can lead to a deficiency of vital nutrients and vitamins, which can in turn lead to suffering from Perleche.

Vitamin B and Iron Deficiencies

In particular, typical sufferers of this infection experience deficiencies in Vitamin B and Iron. For this reason, you need to concentrate on eating a healthier, more balanced diet not only to cure your current infection and prevent future occurrences, but also to become healthier as a whole.

Food Triggers

Certain acidic foods, such as oranges and grapefruits, can trigger Angular Cheilitis. The acidic nature of these foods can lead to more cracking and dryness of the affected areas, which in turn may lead to scarring. If you currently suffer this condition, you are strongly advised to cut these out of your diet to prevent your infection from worsening.

2. Keep The Affected Areas Dry

You should do your very best to keep the affected areas as dry as possible. Keeping the affected areas dry will help your infection heal quicker. You can do this by carrying a handkerchief or tissue with you to wipe away moisture from the lips and corners of the mouth as soon as it accumulates. Another thing you can do is to immediately wipe your mouth after eating.

A few other tips to keep the area dry include eliminating the use of moisturizers. Moisturizers will only bring about more skin redness and irritation. Additionally, you should also drink plenty of water. Water naturally helps the skin stay hydrated. Not only will drinking water quickly relieve your symptoms and end your infection, but it will also leave with you healthier, shinier skin.

3. Dont Lick Your Lips

This habit is something you need to learn how to control if you are accustomed to licking your lips over and over. Licking of the lips goes totally against the advice above of keeping the affected areas dry.

What happens when you lick your lips is that you instantly bring moisture to the area. But this moisture is quickly absorbed by the surrounding air , leaving the area vulnerable to more splits, cracks, sores, and dryness.

4. Practice Good Oral Hygiene

A regular practice of brushing and flossing of the teeth, along with using mouthwash, will help to prevent bacteria from colonizing along the lips and mouth. The absence of bacteria in the area means no fungus is able to grow that can cause an infection.

The initial signs of Angular Cheilitis may require nothing more than eating a balanced diet or applying a lip balm. But should you leave the dryness, redness, and cracking of the corner of the lips unattended, you will require a more comprehensive treatment to heal Angular Cheilitis.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Yeast infections and angular cheilitis?
I have a yeast infection, which I presume I developed by taking antibiotics – one per day for four days, orally. Shortly after I took the antibiotics, I developed angular cheilitis. I have dry, cracked mouth corners with a little crusting. My tongue was yellowish white. My throat is kind of sore. And it’s a pretty bad yeast infection. I know that angular cheilitis is a form of oral thrush. Is it possible that I either
    A) Touched my vagina, and then touched my mouth, and gotten angular cheilitis?
    or
    B) Gotten angular cheilitis / oral thrush by contact from the antibiotics to my mouth?

It also should be said that I was taking antibiotics for trichomoniasis, which I was diagnosed with about 2 weeks ago. I caught it from having sex with a straight, Black male, age 23. The sexual relationship went on unprotected, through April and May. I took the antibiotics wrong the first time, taking 1 per day for 4 days. I saw the doctor again today and took the correct medication, and was diagnosed with a yeast infection.

Can you transmit vaginal thrush to the mouth by the hand? If so, is that what happened to me?

    • ANSWER:
      b
      a is unlikely

  2. QUESTION:
    angular cheilitis question?
I know that i have angular cheilitis ( cracking on the side of my mouth) and if i understand correctly its caused by yeast. I believe i am having a bad vaginal yeast infection with the cheilitis outbreak. is this normal? i have used over the counter meds and they dont seem to be working. thinking of going to the doc tomorrow.

  3. QUESTION:
Am I causing my boyfriend’s angular cheilitis?
I’m 25 years old and my boyfriend of 6 years has suddenly gotten cuts/sores on the inside corners of his mouth. I have googled angular cheilitis and saw that it is caused either by a fungal infection (candida albicans), i.e. too much yeast, or a vitamin deficiency, namely riboflavin (B12).

What I’m concerned about is that I am the cause of this. It happened a couple weeks ago after we were intimate one night and the sores have not gone away. I have not had any yeast infections as of late. I have had them in the past and I know I don’t have one now, but just because I can’t feel anything doesn’t mean something isn’t wrong. Could I be the cause of the angular cheilitis and if so, what can I do to improve my health?

I appreciate all comments with good intention and a sense of maturity. Please respect this question as it is a real concern of mine! Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
There is a very high chance you are giving this to your boyfriend…the only way to know for sure is to go to a doctor, and they will swab his cheek and test the culture and find what is growing in the Petri dish. They will let you know if it is indeed a fungal infection. And yes, it may be embarassing…but…doctors see/hear/deal with these kinds of situations every single day. If you are the cause, you can ask the doctor to reccommend some kind of medication you can take orally. I was given Flagyl when I had a ‘down there’ infection during this pregnancy of mine.

Good luck, and ignore any rude/mean/idiotic comments that I’m sure will be posted on here.

  4. QUESTION:
How do I get rid of Exfoliative Cheilitis ?
I got Angular Cheilitis from giving my girlfriend oral sex while she had a yeast infection. I have two creams. Ciclopirox 0.77% and two other tubes of Nystatin USP, 100,000. Can I put these on my lips, because this cheilitis looks very similar to the flaky sores on my genitals as well and thats why I have the cream. The doctor said to “put on infected areas” so do i rub one or both into my lips like chap stick? It also causes my lips to chap badly. It looks just like this.

http://www.exfoliativecheilitis.com/cheilitis/Untitled-4.jpg I don’t have much flakiness and nothing in the corners of my mouth, just the white/yellow tinted puss like sores under the lining of my lips. Please help!

  5. QUESTION:
Why do I keep getting sick?
    Alright, so here’s the thing.

Ever since February of 2011 entered, I keep getting these infections.
First, I had a this liquidy coming out of my ear, so I had a doctor check it out. She said she saw nothing, and it was probably just water that got in while I was taking a bath. But its been 2 weeks and there’s still a little bit of liquid coming out!
Second, I had a major sore throat. It really really hurt. I got it checked by my doctor again and she said that my throat really was sore and she gave me antibiotics. It went away about 4 days later.
Third, at the moment I have angular cheilitis. This happened a few days after my sore throat went away. I’ve had it for about 3 days already (up to now), and its really annoying & I feel really crappy with it. + my tongue has been getting these ‘splinters’ or ‘cuts’ too ever since this started.
Now, my vagina is itchy like hell. It started yesterday. So I looked it up on the internet and I found out that this might be a yeast infection, but I’m not sure yet.

So, is there something wrong with me? Am I sick? Honestly, I am really worried about my health and my mom is too. I wrote on here because I wanted to know what you guys would say.

    & i’m 14, if that helps.
Answers would be greatly appreciated. Please, I always get scared whenever I get sick, but these ‘infections’ just keeps coming. Thank you :)
Excuse me, it can’t be pregnancy. I’m an absolute virgin, I swear! I’ve never even kissed a guy.
More answers please? Oh and does this have anything to do with my immune system? And for the last time, I’ve never had sex let alone kiss a guy.

    • ANSWER:
Ahhh well the yeast infection is caused by the antibiotics – they kill off the good bacteria in your tummy and you get thrush. Get some pro-biotic yoghurt or some capsules at the health food shop – they’re worth it!
I think your body just hasn’t had a chance to get well! Look up Olive Leaf Extract — tastes like crap, but worth its weight in gold! Will help build up your immune system and help fix a whole heap of little niggly things!
There is nothing seriously wrong with you — now is the time to focus on rebuilding your strength and staying off antibiotics is a start!

What Causes Splits In The Corners Of The Mouth?

If you are wondering what causes splits in the corners of the mouth, you might be relieved to learn that this is caused by a very treatable condition known as angular cheilitis. It is not, as many believe, caused by cold weather or the aftermath of a cold or flu (although these conditions can aggravate it).

Angular cheilitis can occur for a number of reasons. It can happen due to nutritional deficiencies, mainly of the B group vitamins, iron and zinc, or it can happen due to constant wetting of the mouth edges due to dribbling or drooling. This could be due to badly fitting dentures, slack muscles around the mouth edges or pen biting or finger sucking.

The splits in the corners of the mouth become entrenched with bacteria and often develop into a fungal infection and this is when the real problems can start. Fungal infections do not easily go away on their own and very often, sufferers find that no amount of over the counter treatments or even prescription medication helps in the long term.

The key to successful treatment is twofold. First of all, you need to examine what causes splits in the corner of the mouth in your case and tackle that. For example, if you suspect a vitamin deficiency is to blame, address that by taking a good, all round nutritional supplement which includes iron, zinc and the B vitamins. If you know that constant dampening of the lips and mouth edges are to blame, then deal with this by removing the cause if possible. For example, if dentures are to blame, have them repaired or replaced. If finger sucking or pen biting are the issue, then try applying a bitter tasting liquid, such as that bought to discourage nail-biting.

Of course, dealing with the root cause of splits in the corners of the mouth is only part of the issue. This is an extremely painful condition and everyday activities such as eating, drinking or speaking become excruciating. What is also absolutely necessary is to get fast relief from the pain and the way to deal with a fungal or bacterial infection is to starve the area of air and moisture and the splits will heal within hours.

If you have had cracked lip corners or scabs for more than a couple of days, it is likely that the condition has taken hold. If you would like to look at pictures that can help you verify your own condition, you can download this simple and effective overnight cure which is completely guaranteed to work fast. This cure will dry out the sore area within hours, providing fast and permanent relief.

The total lack of effective treatments from conventional sources, such as pharmacies and doctors, often leads sufferers to spend many frustrating months or even years, living with a sore mouth with unsightly lesions. The split corners of mouth never really seem to heal many people put this down to the fact that as the mouth is constantly moving for eating, speaking and drinking, it never gets the opportunity to heal. Now whilst this is true to some extent, the real sticking point as far as healing is concerned is the fact that this condition is caused by a fungal bacteria and until this is eradicated, angular cheilitis will never be cured.

Normally, the bacteria which lives naturally on our lips causes no problems whatsoever, but in vulnerable people, the bacteria can take hold and become fungal in nature and then difficult to eradicate. Sometimes the bacteria can take hold in people with lowered immune systems or those with a deficiency in vitamin B or iron. In others, it can be because the ideal conditions are present on the skin to assist fungal growth, such as damp, warm pockets of skin which may form around the mouth due to ill-fitting dentures. Find Address By Cell Phone Number – The Easiest Way To Locate The Owner Of A Cell Phone Number

If you want to learn the present address for a certain cell phone user, the answers are just a click away at the site of a reliable reverse cell phone directory. If you decide to perform your search anywhere else, you will come up empty handed – this much I promise.

So, if you are looking to find the current address of a particular wireless phone owner, just finish reading this brief article to learn the best method.

Find Address By Cell Phone Number – Why Free Methods Don’t Work

Before I get into the most effective method for searching mobile phone users, here’s why you shouldn’t bother looking for this information in one of the free public directories like the White Pages or AnyWho.

a Free directories only carry personal information in connection with telephone numbers that are considered public information. Wireless numbers are still considered private information. For this reason, you will not find these numbers in the free directories.

And, if you are thinking of finding this information by getting on Google, Yahoo, Bing, or any other search engine, your chances of succeeding are just about the same as winning the next Powerball or Mega Millions lottery drawing.

I already mentioned that wireless numbers are considered private information. Guess who owns this information? Companies like T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon own and manage these numbers. Since these numbers are still considered private, they are not legally obligated to share the information with the public.

The only way they release this data is be selling it to the reverse cell phone directories that are now the means by which anybody can find any person by simply searching their cell phone number.
