Teenage Nutrition For Autistic Young Adults, May Make A Difference? Is It True?

Nutrition comes primarily from what a person eats and drinks. Some people supplement their nutrition by taking vitamins. Autistic teenagers, as well as teenagers without autism, need healthy nutrition and a level of exercise that is very important to meet the demands of their growing body.

The best nutritional plan for everyone is to eat a healthy variety of foods at the proper portion throughout the day. The amount of food a person needs will vary depending on their level of activity. An active person, such as an autistic young teenage adult, requires a higher caloric intake to meet the demands of their body using up that energy faster. A less active person, needs proper nutrition in smaller amounts. This will decrease the risk of these extra calories being stored in their body as fat.

Many young boys have a period of time when their body rapidly grows. During this time the teen may have an endless appetite. Boys have a growth spurt beginning at ages 12 to 13. This growth peaks around age 14 and usually ends at about age 19. During this time their hormones change, and their muscles, bones and even their brain continues to grow. It is not uncommon for a teenage boy to gain between 37 and 40 pounds during these years. Some of this weight varies depending on how tall or muscular they become.

The food should be a good balance of vitamins and minerals. Their bones need a good source of calcium. Most people get their calcium from drinking low fat milk (1 or 2%), through orange juice with added calcium, and low fat cheeses (mozzarella string cheese is a favorite for many.) Dairy products not only provide calcium they are also a good source of protein. Milk is a good source of vitamin D.

Snacking is important to maintain the energy supple the body needs. This also helps prevent the teen from becoming overly hungry between meals that can lead to over eating at mealtime.

Protein is supplied by meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts. When cooking meat it is best to either bake, broil, or grill. This decreases the fat content.

Vegetables supply the body with vitamin A and C, and minerals like iron and magnesium, also fiber. Be sure to have good color variety, light ad dark green, yellow, red, orange, white and purple.

Fruits provide vitamin A and C and potassium. Avoid canned with HEAVY SYRUP because of the high sugar content. Again, have a variety of colors, red, yellow, green, purple, orange, blue.

Grains provide energy in the form of complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fiber. This can be found in breads, cereals, rice, pasta and nuts.

During the daytime PAY ATTENTION TO THE SERVING SIZE on the labels. This is a good guide. It is also helpful to eat the majority of your foods earlier in the day rather than late at night. During the daytime we are more active and the use of calories for the energy needed throughout the day seem to wear off sooner than at night.

Autistic young adults may take certain medications to help their brain function the best it can, this adds the challenge of maintaining a proper weight. The medications tend to add weight so it is best to help them with a healthy nutritional plan and regular exercise. It may be an excellent idea to discuss with your physician or experts in this field.

Exercise on a regular basis is important to everyone. It not only helps with weight control, but also keeps our bodies flexible. Exercise provides strength to our muscles/bones, helps us calm down and think clearer, breathe better and in general feel good. This applies to autistic teenagers as well.

I’m losing my lip line due to accutane. What can I do to restore it?
I’ve been on 60mg/day accutane (isotrentinoin) for 5 months now and most side-effects that I’ve encountered aren’t too bad (dry skin etc). But today I noticed my lip line has become very much less distinguishable than it was before the treatment.

    I read here
(Third paragraph under subtitle ‘Dry Lips and Skin’), that its called ‘actinic cheilitis’ and its precancerous!

When accutane began, I regularly used the Banana Boat sunscreen lip balm. This didn’t taste good so I changed to the original ‘Lypsyl’, which tasted better. The reason for the actinic cheilitis might be because the Lypsyl isn’t a sunscreen. So I’ve gone back to the Banana Boat sunscreen lip balm hoping for the actinic cheilitis to stop increasing

Is the damage permanent? If not, can it heal naturally? or is there anything I can do (that doesn’t involve temporary cover-up or girls’ makeup) that will restore the lip-line?

    • ANSWER:
Oh for goodness sakes, you don’t have that! Stop reading crap on the Internet and self-diagnosing. You are on Accutane so you have regular follow ups with your doctor.

Ask her/him about it and keep using sunscreen – it is the most important thing you can do.

Angular Cheilitis Treatment – Tips to Consider

Having cracked corners of the mouth is incredibly uncomfortable. It makes it more difficult to eat, to drink and even to smile. When you suffer with Angular Cheilitis you’re more self conscious and many of the prescription medications devoted to treatment, are incredibly expensive and not always that effective. If you want an Angular Chelitis treatment that works you may only need to look as far as your own home. Home remedies are often the best to help calm the redness and soreness from these pesky cracks at the corner of the mouth.

If you wear dentures, they may actually be contributing to your Angular Cheilitis problem. Dentures that are poorly fitted can cause rubbing and drooling, both of which exasperate the problem of cracks by the mouth. If you do feel that your dentures could use a little adjusting, have that tended to as soon as possible. This is an easy Angular Cheilitis treatment that can benefit both the redness and the soreness of this condition.

Not getting enough Vitamin B can also be behind these small cracks near the lips. If your body isn’t getting enough Vitamin B, you simply need to adjust your diet. Adding bananas, leafy greens, dairy products and organ meats will really prove beneficial. Not only will you notice a difference in the condition of the corner of your mouth but you’ll be adding an essential set of vitamins to your daily menu.

One Angular Cheilitis treatment that many people turn to is to use a moisturizer on their lips, and more specifically on the area where the redness and cracking is occurring. This may actually be doing more harm than good. You really want to aim to keep the area very dry and if you apply a moisturizer or lip balm you may actually be locking moisture in. In addition, you need to be mindful of licking your lips. If you are doing it self consciously to try and moisten the area to help with the pain, try to be more aware of it. Licking your lips isn’t going to help at all and can make the problem even worse.

I’m currently taking medication for angular cheilitis (two different ones to solve the problem) and I am wondering whether or not my dry chapped lips would go away as well. My doctor told me the rashes/redness around my mouth should go away within a week, but I am wondering if my chapped lips will go away once the treatment is done. I noticed around December of 07 that my lips became extremely chapped, and after that the dryness never went away – even after using much Vaseline/chap stick to moisturize it. Since I was told that dried lips are also a symptom of angular cheilitis that would mean my lips would go back to normal right? Cause I’m not sure and I really wish I didn’t have to carry around Vaseline where every I go.

it depends upon the meds you are on, and the etiology of your chapped lips-wait and see, however, you may want to change to chap stick, personally, if find that a lot more effective than vaseline-also, if you are a mouth breather, you may need chronic treatment for chapped lips…good luck.

Your Angular Cheilitis Queries Addressed

The corners of your mouth have cracks. You’re uncomfortable with talking and eating because they are itchy and painful. You may be experiencing angular cheilitis.

What’s Angular Cheilitis?

Angular cheilitis is one of numerous skin conditions that are chronic. These are manifested in painful, inflamed bilateral lesions at the corner of the mouth. It can either be Staphylococcal (bacterial) or Candidal (fungal) infections that are characterized by shallow chaps and bleeding ulcers at its most severe.

Angular Cheilitis Causes

Infections Both Fungal and Bacterial – Angular cheilitis are caused and increased by Candidiasis (yeast or fungal) or Staphylococcal (viral or bacterial) pathogens.

Deficiency in Nutrients – Angular cheilitis is often initially caused by nutritional deficiencies such as defiency in Vitamin B-2 (Riboflavin), B-3 (Niacin), B-6 (Pyridoxine), or B-12 (Cyanocobalamin) and iron deficiency anemia.

Improper Closure of the Mouth – The build-up of saliva at the mouth’s corners from ill-fitting dentures can bring tension. Pathogens that bring angular cheilitis grow in this environment. The mouth’s over-closure when the elderly loses their teeth and their jaw’s vertical dimension also causes angular cheilitis.

Low Temperature – Mild manifestations of angular cheilitis happen commonly among children and teenagers during winter time.

Who’s Largely In Danger?

Angular cheilitis can afflict anyone from all age brackets. Though more common among the elderly, it also hits young children and teenagers. Weakened immune system, unhealthy diet, and malnutrition leave people more susceptible to the problem. Contact allergies and skin conditions like seborrhoiec or atopic dermatitis also make a person susceptible to angular cheilitis. People undergoing the anti-acne treatment, isotretinoin, must also take extra care.

Are There Treatments for the Condition?

Doctor-prescribed antifungals in topical form such as Clotrimazole, Nystatin, and Econazole can treat severe angular cheilitis. Maintaining a healthy diet and proper hygiene and applying paraffin-based ointments and lip balm for protection can treat less severe conditions.

Angular cheilitis may not be a serious and deadly problem, but it still requires a lot of attention as it subjects the sufferer to emotional alienation. Normal things like kissing, eating, and speaking become difficult.

Do you suffer from angular cheilitis? Don’t just sit back. Something needs to be done.

Interesting that you know what angular cheilitis is! I have a very good suggestion that is not written in any journal, but I have seen work MANY times. Go to your local health food/druggist and buy a cheap bottle of Vit. E capsules. Using a straight pin, puncture the capsule and squeeze out a small amount on to you finger tip. Rub the Vit. E gel lightly on to the cheilitis. You can do this 4 to 5 times a day (one capsule should last all day). It works very quickly, maybe a day or 2. Otherwise, cheilitis can take several weeks to heal. Hope this works for you, let me know!

Angular cheilitis is the term used to describe the condition where an inflamed lesion or eruption that appears to be moist, red or white, develops at one or both corners of the mouth. The condition is also known as angular stomatitis or perleche. However, the term stomatitis encompasses all types of oral inflammation and ulcers. This condition can affect anyone but it is more commonly observed in older individuals especially the elderly. A form of this condition that appears in children and teenagers does not just include sores at the corners of the mouth but also results in chapped lips as well.

The exact origins of angular cheilitis are still largely unidentified but experts have pinpointed several potential causes. Some studies have established a link between the onset of the condition with nutritional deficiencies. Experts have found out that a deficiency in riboflavin, zinc as well as iron deficiency anemia contribute to the beginning of the condition. Poorly fitting dentures and the lack of teeth can also cause this condition because it allows for accumulation of moisture in the skin folds of the corners of the mouth. Sagging skin, characteristic of the elderly, also promotes bacterial growth and infection that in turn makes one more susceptible to the condition. The use of dentures also increases the risk of developing the condition because they provide a place for bacteria to multiply and develop.

Though the condition is not life-threatening as most diseases are, symptoms of angular cheilitis can still be excruciatingly painful and very unattractive at the same time. Its most prominent symptom is the development of a small rash that develops later on into cracks or fissures found at both corners of the mouth. These cracks can also result in pain, the intensity of which depends on the severity of the fissures. The cracks may later on lead to splitting due to the opening and closing actions done by the mouth. Splitting may cause bleeding in severe conditions. Bumps and dry, flaky skin are also characteristic of this condition. As mentioned earlier, chapped lips are also observed among the younger patients.

Though the condition is not extremely harmful, being afflicted with it can lead one to suffer sleepless nights, severe pain, and even embarrassment. The condition not only inflicts physical pain it also changes one’s appearance and disfigures the most prominent part of the human body, the face. Thankfully, there are several ways to manage this condition. Many natural treatments are being offered for this affliction for those patients enough to look for it. There are resources that provide natural remedies that are sure to give patients relief from angular cheilitis.

We have taken our time to research the best of them, and written about them in our blog.

We hope you find it useful!
